Artemis 3 spacesuits to be equipped with 4G

The Artemis project is currently being developed to bring the first people back to the moon after the Apollo programme in the 60s and 70s. As part of this, the spacesuits are being redesigned using the technology that its antecedent did not have access to. As part of this, NASA is planning to add 4G cellular network technology.

Axiom Space’s AxEMU EVA spacesuit model is going to be able to be connected to a 4G network being designed by Nokia. This network will compress the previous model consisting of base station towers with radio arrays, into a box that fits onto a lunar lander. "For the Artemis 3 mission, we will be able to reach astronauts up to 2 kilometres [1.25 miles] away from the lander," Thierry E. Klein, president of Nokia Bell Labs Solutions Research said.

Russell Ralston who is the executive vice president of extravehicular activities at Axiom Space, also commented "From a communication perspective, the key components of a smartphone will be integrated with the spacesuit and adapted to the space environment and operational requirements," Astronauts will be able to use this network for activities like broadcasting high definition video or transmit large volumes of scientific data to the base station and then back to Earth. This will prove exceedingly useful for the scientists and will provide us with amazing views straight from the lunar surface.
